Where are international students going to, and where are they coming from? Data shows that highly developed countries continue to be the destination of choice
Where are international students heading, and where are they coming from? The landscape of international student mobility is influenced by a myriad of factors, including economic opportunities and the quality of education available. The Covid-19 pandemic significantly disrupted student travel, resulting in a marked decline in international student numbers in 2020 and 2021, as many opted to return to their home countries. Although not all nations had fully rebounded by 2022, the patterns of student migration began to stabilise.
According to UNESCO data, highly developed economies continue to dominate as preferred destinations for international students, hosting more than three-quarters of the global international student population despite accounting for less than one-quarter of the overall student body.
